Biological membranes separate living cells from their environment,
and in the cell they enable the formation of closed compartments, the
organelles. Membranes are selectively permeable for ions and nutrients and
permit the exchange of solutes via transport proteins. We are interested in the
structure, function and regulation of important transport proteins which we
investigate using a broad spectrum of biochemical, molecular genetic, cell biological and physiological methods.
